Homer Eighth Graders Participate in Career Day

Eighth grade students at Homer Junior High School were able to connect with dozens of professionals and discuss a variety of job opportunities during a recent career day.
The day was packed full of career advice and opportunities for the students, including a guest speaker from Onondaga Community College (OCC), three workshop sessions at OCM BOCES and a tour of SUNY Cortland’s campus.
The day started with a trip to OCM BOCES, where guest speaker Abigail Baird, Director of Career Services at OCC, explained the importance of obtaining soft skills, such as a strong work ethic and positive attitude.
“Soft skills might not be in your curriculum, but your teachers and parents are always training you to have them,” Baird said. “You just have to be a willing participant in learning them.”
Baird said to increase soft skills, she would advise students to participate in extracurricular activities and engage in other group projects to build valuable teamwork skills that employers seek in potential candidates.
Following Baird’s presentation, students broke into separate groups and participated in three workshop sessions that visited specific Career and Technical Education programs each student had interest in. Each program had students participate in a hands-on project, such as baking a cake in Culinary and Pastry Arts or changing tires in Automotive Technology.
The students then boarded buses and travel to SUNY Cortland to view the campus and learn more about future educational opportunities.
