The District was recently notified of a data security incident, believed to have occurred in or around November 2018. This incident involved the unauthorized access of Personally Identifiable Information from the AIMSWeb 1.0 system. AIMSWeb is an assessment platform provided by Pearson Clinical Assessment (Pearson). Homer Schools utilized AIMSWeb to monitor student progress in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The District stopped using AIMSWeb in 2017.
Our vendor, the Central New York Regional Information Center (CNYRIC), received the list of affected students on August 26, 2019. This information was shared with the district on August 28, 2019.
Student data was limited to: First Name, Last Name, Date of Birth, and a Student Information System Identification Number. Affected parties will be notified via first class mail.
Homer is committed to protecting and securing educational data. Our team has extensive training in data security and privacy, and our systems have many controls in place to protect your child’s educational records. Additionally, CNYRIC also received assurances that Pearson has taken the necessary steps to mitigate the incident and is enhancing protections to guard against similar events.
With respect to Homer, this issue involves archived data since the District stopped using AIMSWeb in 2017. While it is our understanding that there is no evidence that the information described above has been misused, Pearson is offering complimentary credit monitoring from Experian (a national credit monitoring company) for one year for affected individuals as a precautionary measure. If you are interested in learning more about this option, please call Experian at 866-883-3309.
Please contact Superintendent Thomas Turck at 607-749-7241 or firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions you have regarding this incident and the district’s response.
