Routinely, Homer Central School personnel conduct safety drills as well as cooperate with police in ensuring a safe school environment. One part of this routine is to use K-9 officers to assist in the search of school lockers.
Building administrators, assisted by K-9 officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office, along with Village of Homer Police, conducted a search of the senior high school building and lockers on November 19th. Lockers were searched by Homer School administrative staff in the process. Students and their parents are contacted if a student locker is searched.
In addition to the K-9 search, procedures for a hold in place were reviewed and simulated during the search. These procedures are used when an event occurs causing the need for students and staff to stay clear of the hallways and common areas of the high school. Instruction continued during this morning's drill.
We appreciate the cooperation of students, staff and visitors at the senior high school during this drill. Additionally, we are fortunate to have the assistance of local law enforcement in promoting a safe school environment. Please contact Mr. Van Etten, building principal with any questions.
