Salmon River Fish Hatchery
Homer Junior High seventh graders recently visited the Salmon River Fish Hatchery in Altmar, New York to witness the annual migration of Coho and Chinook salmon to their birthplace. Students got to observe New York's Great Lakes fishery program in action with a tour of the hatchery. Biologists from the Fisher Ave. office greeted the students and gave them an up close opportunity to see the salmon and some daring students even picked them up.. The trip was the culmination of their unit on salmon and trout ecology. This was the 25th consecutive year in which Homer students explored the hatchery, and for the 25th year, hatchery managers said Homer has the best behaved and most prepared students who come to visit the facility.
