Building Minds in South Sudan

Sixth graders Emma A. and Charlotte W. are holding a certified check made out to the charity Building Minds in South Sudan. Last December, a former Lost Boy of Sudan, Sebastian Maroundit, spoke to the Junior High student body. Sebastian told his story of surviving the Sudanese civil war, walking hundreds of miles to a refugee camp, and his eventual journey to America. Sebastian is a firm believer in the power of education to change lives and build a strong future for all. To that end, he founded his charity ( to build schools in South Sudan. Homer students collected spare change from students and staff, and also placed collection jars in local businesses that sell Fair Trade and Organic products. Way to go, Emma and Charlotte, for demonstrating character education in real life terms. Homer’s Blue Pride extends all the way to South Sudan!
