Dates have been scheduled for students who need to complete the Alive @ 25 course. Sign up sheets are located in the Principal's Office at the high school. Students are reminded that this course is required for all students who wish to obtain a parking pass to park on school property. The course is offered on the following dates:

Friday, September 3rd 3:00 - 7:00 p.m., and

RE: Information regarding the Driver Education Program at Homer HS

You are receiving this correspondence because you have registered for this summer’s Driver Education Program to be held at Homer HS. I am aware that many of you have been anxiously waiting for this information. I thank you for your patience. Hopefully this letter will answer any questions you might have. If after reading this you have remaining questions, please don’t hesitate to call my office at 315-431-8561.

The program will run every day, Monday through Friday from July 6 through the final exam on August 17. Although Driver Education is part of our Regional Summer School Program at Homer HS, it has a schedule and a calendar that is specifically tailored to meet the very strict time requirements of the New York State Education Department and the Department of Motor Vehicles. There are two major elements of Driver Education, both with minimum time requirements that each student MUST meet in order to pass the course and receive their Student Driver Education Certificate. These elements are Classroom Instruction and In-Car Instruction.

Classroom Instruction: The first day of Classroom Instruction for all students will be Tuesday, July 6. «FirstName» «LastName»is to report to Room «Room» at Homer HS for the «Time» session. The teacher for this class is «Teacher». It is critical that all students attend this first day of class because part of this class will be used to establish student driving groups for the in-car portion of the course. For the remainder of the program, this class will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the same time period.

Classroom Instruction - Attendance and Make-up policy: All students are expected to come to class and be on time every day class is in session. If a student does miss a class, the student will still be responsible for all information presented as it may be included on future tests. If a student misses more than 3 days, (s)he will not have met the State time requirement for class instruction and will fail the course. Missed Classroom instruction CANNOT be made up. If a student is more than 15 minutes late for class, it will be counted as an absence.

In-Car Instruction will begin for some students on Wednesday, July 7 and for others on Thursday, July 8. This will be determined in the July 6 classroom instruction session. In-car instruction for each student will take place every other day; if a student has in-car instruction on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, one week, (s)he will have it on Tuesday and Thursday the next, with this pattern continuing throughout the summer. You will note that each group is listed 15 times; they must meet 16 times. Each group will therefore meet once during the summer on a Tuesday or a Thursday in the same time period for which they have classroom instruction. Driving times for consecutive weeks are shown in the tables below for students with classroom instruction (classroom) in the 8:30 to 10:00 time slot. The format is similar for those with classroom from 10:00 to 11:30.

In-Car Instruction – Attendance and Make-up Policy: Each driving group will have 16 scheduled in-car sessions. Since 16 is the minimum number of sessions mandated by the state, there is no room for error. If a student misses an in-car session, it is the student’s responsibility to arrange a make-up session immediately upon his/her return to class. Unless a student receives previous permission from the instructor, instruction must be made up within a calendar week. There are a limited number of available make-up periods (see above table); if a make-up session is required for more students than can be accommodated in a car (4), students with 3 or less total absences for the summer will receive priority over those with more than 3 absences. It is therefore possible that if a student has more than 3 in-car absences, make-up opportunities may not be available; this would result in course failure. See the reverse of this page for other items important to successful participation.

· All students must have a Learner’s Permit or Driver License in order to participate in The Driver Education Program.

· Students must wear foot wear suitable for safe driving: Most shoes or sneakers are acceptable; flip flops are not acceptable.

· Each student’s final grade for Driver Education will be the average of the student’s final class grade and final in-car grade. Final grades for classroom instruction will be determined by weighting your Marking Period (MP) 1 Grade as 40%, your MP 2 Grade as 40%, and your Final Exam score as 20%. Teachers will also provide students a final grade for the in-car component of the program. Sixty-five is required for passing in most of our component schools.

· Please complete the enclosed Emergency Medical Information Form. Students are to bring this with them to the first day of class.

· The Driver Education Program is part of the Onondaga-Cortland-Madison Regional Summer School Program at Homer HS. All rules and regulations pertaining to the Summer School Program also pertain to students enrolled in Driver Education. Driver education students will review these rules and the school’s Code of Conduct on the first day of school. Students will also review a Behavioral Contract for Summer School which they will need to sign in order to participate.

· The MV 285 BLUE CARD issued after successful completion of the OCM BOCES Driver Education program could mean up to a 15% discount from many insurance companies.

DRIVERS EDUCATION UPDATE AS OF JUNE 22, 2010

On Wednesday, 6/23, OCM BOCES Driver Education Staff will meet to schedule students in their driver education theory classes. The first day of class will be 7/6, however there will be no driving instruction on that day as teachers will use some of the class time to determine in-car instruction times for their students.

No additional registrations for Homer High School students will be taken after June 25^th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.

Once theory classes are scheduled, OCM BOCES will send an informational letter to students/parents of students enrolled in Driver Education for this summer. The letter to be sent to all enrolled students will provide the following information:

Teacher's name
Time and location of theory class
Program long schedule of class meeting dates
Use of first class session to determine in-car instruction times (The letter will also describe the alternating day format for in-car instruction)
A reminder that they must have permit to participate
Attendance and make-up policy

The letter will be mailed by June 25th. After reading the letter, if you still have questions after June 28^th please direct them to OCM BOCES.

Art Expo 2010 - Today!!!

Homer High School's "Art Expo 2010", is an annual exhibition of creative works by students in grades 9 through 12 in Mr. Brian Wallace's and Mr. Paul Andre's art classes.

Hundreds of creative pieces will be on display in the high school auditorium today, June 14th, from noon to 8:00pm. This event is open to the public.

FINAL AND STATE EXAM PERIOD TO BEGIN

Teachers at Homer High School will offer Local Final Exams

on June 10^th, 11^th and 14^th, 2010

Final Exams will be given during normal class periods.

Regents Exams and RCT’s will be given June, 15^th – 23^rd, 2010

A special Regents and RCT Exam schedule will be followed.

OCM BOCES classes end June 11^th, 2010.

Morning BOCES students will have a supervised study hall on June 11^th.

Afternoon BOCES students will be dismissed from school at the end of Period 5

on Monday and should leave campus at that time.

Traditionally, students have gathered in the upper parking lot on the last day of classes. Because of the disruptive and unsafe nature this occurrence has grown into, students leaving the school on Monday will be asked to leave school grounds for the day. Students driving to school will be asked to leave the parking lot at dismissal when they report to their cars.

Oklahoma! comes to Homer

The HS Musical Theater Department is presenting Oklahoma! Thursday-Saturday, March 4-6 at 7pm in the HS Auditorium. It's a fun family show that is responsible for restarting the popularity of the musical theater genre after the Great Depression. Oklahoma! is a romantic comedy where cowboys and farmers vie for the girls affections, as does a Persian peddler and a surly hired hand. Set in the Wild West, it features lively dance numbers, memorable songs, inventive lighting (by Dan Camp) and a dream sequence enhanced by a very creative video (by Homer HS Video club).

Tickets will be on sale in the Music Building (749-1258) from 9am-5pm March 1-5 and at the door. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students/seniors, and $25 for families of any size.

High School Regents Week!

Dear Parents:

As our first semester draws to a close we have a need to administer local and state exams. The high school will be operating on a modified schedule on Tuesday, January 26^th and Wednesday, January 27^th, 2010. Only those students taking an exam will be required to be in attendance on those two days. Please be advised that all juniors taking the English 11 Regents exam will need to be present both Tuesday and Wednesday, as this is a two-day exam. Monday, February 1^st is a scheduled Staff Development Day and students should not be in attendance on Monday unless scheduled for a Regents or RCT exam. The high school will return to regularly scheduled classes on Tuesday, February 2^nd, 2010. During the January exam period, BOCES will continue to run regularly scheduled classes. BOCES students are expected to attend BOCES classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday unless they have a scheduled Regents/RCT, mid-term, or a final. Please make note of the modified transportation schedule which appears on the reverse side of this letter.

Student Selected as Alternate for All-State Band

Senior Shelby Withiam has been chosen as a flute alternate for the All-State Band festival being held in Rochester this December. She was selected based on her perfect score of 100 on her level 6 flute solo at last May’s NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) solo festival held in Auburn. Students are selected from across New York State based on their spring solo festival NYSSMA scores. Flutes, saxophones, and percussion are annually the most competitive. Congratulations Shelby!

ALIVE @ 25 Course

Any Student wishing to obtain a high school PARKING PERMIT for the 2009-2010 school year is REQUIRED to take the "ALIVE @ 25" Driving Safety course being offered this June.

Registration forms are available in the Main Office & the Guidance Office, or click here to print a copy. Completed applications should be placed in the 'drop boxes' in the Main Office or Guidance Office. You should indicate, in order of preference, your choices for class times.

Class times will be:

Wednesday, June 10^th 4:00-8:00 PM

Regents week: (be certain this does not conflict with one of your exams)

We must start promptly at 5:30, so PLEASE arrive 15 minutes early for clerical needs

*Due to the early starting time, feel free to bring something to eat.

Make yourself a better and safer driver! Each participant will receive a reduction in their insurance premium of 10% for 3 years. This reduction applies to the no-fault, liability, and collision portions of your auto insurance. Participants may also be eligible for a 4-point reduction on their driving record.

The After Prom Party Committee is selling Easter flowers. All proceeds benefit the After Prom Party. Plants will be available for pick up on April 8th from 2:30 - 5:00 in the High School lobby. Please help us support this very important event. Also, the next meeting of the After Prom Party Committe is April 2nd at 7:00 in the High School Cafeteria. Parents of juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend and help plan the party.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF JUNIORS AND SENIORS

The next meeting of the After Prom Party Committee is scheduled for February 25^th at 7:00 in the High School Cafeteria.

The After Prom Party will be held at the J.M. McDonald Sports Complex from midnight until 3:30 a.m. following the prom. The party is designed as a fun, safe and substance free way to finish off prom night. Parents are needed to help plan, fundraise, decorate, chaperone and bake for this event. Please plan to attend our next meeting.

Five Strategies That Work

To Prevent Underage Drinking and Drug Use

Take Your Teen on Adventures - Alcohol and drugs give teens a thrill, a rush. Show them that they can "go to the limit" in ways that are healthy. Take them sky-diving, roller-coaster riding, white water-rafting, or mountain climbing, Ok, these may be a bit extreme but there are many ways to have fun and excitement that don’t involve alcohol and other drugs. Do something. Push yourself and your teen out of your comfort zones. When you do this, you train the brain to get "high" naturally and not using some artificial substance.

Make the Tough Call - It is not easy to check up on our teens but it is important to do so. When they go somewhere, make the tough call to the place where they are going. Get to know your teen's friends' parents. Find out about their supervision and what are their rules and guidelines for parties or gatherings. If their rules are not consistent with what you believe, don't let your teen go there.

Talk about Consequences - There are many negative consequences to drinking and other drug use. Discuss these with your teen regularly. Addictive substances...
- create dependency ("I want more")
- damage the brain and cause poor judgment
- poison the blood
- can lead to unprotected sex (AIDS, pregnancy, STDs)
- can induce vomiting and sickness
- can lead to arrest. Legal fees can run as high as $10,000 and a police record will follow your teen into college and adulthood
- can lead to a loss of trust and privileges with family and friends.
- can lead to suspension in school, sports and other activities.

Set Clear and Manageable Rules and Guidelines - First and foremost, set a policy of NO drinking and other drug use. Be very clear about this. Research has shown that if you are not clear, your teen will interpret your "lack of clarity" as permission to use. Other rules may include:
- not riding in a car with someone who has been drinking or using other drugs
- coming home at a certain time
- checking in by cell phone at certain times
- offering rewards for good behavior
- introducing you to friends and parents of those friends.
Use consequences and state them in advance, not at the time of the mistake. "If you do such and such, these things will happen."

Listen, Listen, and Listen - Teens face a tough world these days. They have lots of feelings about all this but don’t want to show it because it is not "cool." Flare-ups, however, inevitably come our way. Welcome these. Don't get defensive. Listen to their struggles and keep the lines of honest communication open. You need to listen to their feelings of anger, sadness, and embarrassment. Don't take it personally if directed at you. Your teen is trying to figure his or her life and you need to help them do this. If you blame or yell at them they will stop sharing their struggles. Tell them you love them no matter what.

The very first Homer school paper the Homer Academy News appeared 78 years ago on October 3, 1930! You will be able to view a copy of it as part of the new edition.
