&lt;div&gt;You are receiving this correspondence because you have registered for this summer&amp;rsquo;s Driver Education Program to be held at Homer HS.&amp;nbsp;I am aware that many of you have been anxiously waiting for this information. I thank you for your patience. Hopefully this letter will answer any questions you might have. If after reading this you have remaining questions, please don&amp;rsquo;t hesitate to call my office at 315-431-8561.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;The program will run every day, Monday through Friday from July 6 through the final exam on August 17. &lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/b&gt;Although Driver Education is part of our Regional Summer School Program at Homer HS, it has a schedule and a calendar that is specifically tailored to meet the very strict time requirements of the New York State Education Department and the Department of Motor Vehicles.&amp;nbsp;There are two major elements of Driver Education, both with minimum time requirements that each student MUST meet in order to pass the course and receive their Student Driver Education Certificate.&amp;nbsp;These elements are Classroom Instruction and In-Car Instruction.&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;Classroom Instruction: The first day&lt;/b&gt; of Classroom Instruction for all students will be Tuesday, July 6.&amp;nbsp;&lt;span&gt;&lt;span&gt;&amp;laquo;FirstName&amp;raquo;&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span&gt;&amp;laquo;LastName&amp;raquo;&lt;/span&gt;is to report to Room &lt;span&gt;&amp;laquo;Room&amp;raquo;&lt;/span&gt; at Homer HS for the &lt;span&gt;&amp;laquo;Time&amp;raquo;&lt;/span&gt; session. The teacher for this class is &lt;span&gt;&amp;laquo;Teacher&amp;raquo;&lt;/span&gt;. &amp;nbsp;&lt;b&gt;It is critical that all students attend this first day of class because part of this class will be used to establish student driving groups for the in-car portion of the course. &lt;/b&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;For the remainder of the program, this class will be held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the same time period. &amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;Classroom Instruction - Attendance and Make-up policy: &lt;/b&gt;All students are expected to come to class and be on time every day class is in session. If a student does miss a class, the student will still be responsible for all information presented as it may be included on future tests.&amp;nbsp;If a student misses more than 3 days, (s)he will not have met the State time requirement for class instruction and will fail the course. Missed Classroom instruction CANNOT be made up. If a student is more than 15 minutes late for class, it will be counted as an absence.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;In-Car Instruction &lt;/b&gt;will begin for some students on Wednesday, July 7 and for others on Thursday, July 8.&amp;nbsp;This will be determined in the July 6 classroom instruction session.&amp;nbsp;In-car instruction for each student will take place every other day; if a student has in-car instruction on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, one week, (s)he will have it on Tuesday and Thursday the next, with this pattern continuing throughout the summer. You will note that each group is listed 15 times; they must meet 16 times.&amp;nbsp;Each group will therefore meet once during the summer on a Tuesday or a Thursday in the same time period for which they have classroom instruction. Driving times for consecutive weeks are shown in the tables below for students with classroom instruction (classroom) in the 8:30 to 10:00 time slot.&amp;nbsp;The format is similar for those with classroom from 10:00 to 11:30.&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;div&gt;&lt;b&gt;In-Car Instruction &amp;ndash; Attendance and Make-up Policy: &lt;/b&gt;Each driving group will have 16 scheduled in-car sessions. Since 16 is the minimum number of sessions mandated by the state, there is no room for error.&amp;nbsp;If a student misses an in-car session, it is the student&amp;rsquo;s responsibility to arrange a make-up session immediately upon his/her return to class.&amp;nbsp;Unless a student receives previous permission from the instructor, instruction must be made up within a calendar week. 		<title>High School Regents Week!</title>

&lt;div&gt;Dear Parents:&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;As our first semester draws to a close we have a need to administer local and state exams.&amp;nbsp;The high school will be operating on a modified schedule on Tuesday, January 26&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; and Wednesday, January 27&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt;, 2010.&amp;nbsp; Only those students taking an exam will be required to be in attendance on those two days.&amp;nbsp; Please be advised that all juniors taking the English 11 Regents exam will need to be present both Tuesday and Wednesday, as this is a two-day exam.&amp;nbsp; Monday, February 1&lt;sup&gt;st&lt;/sup&gt; is a scheduled Staff Development Day and students should not be in attendance on Monday unless scheduled for a Regents or RCT exam.&amp;nbsp;The high school will return to regularly scheduled classes on Tuesday, February 2&lt;sup&gt;nd&lt;/sup&gt;, 2010.&amp;nbsp; During the January exam period, BOCES will continue to run regularly scheduled classes. BOCES students are expected to attend BOCES classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday unless they have a scheduled Regents/RCT, mid-term, or a final.&lt;span&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/span&gt;Please make note of the modified transportation schedule which appears on the reverse side of this letter.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;

		<title>Student Selected as Alternate for All-State Band</title>
		<description>&lt;p&gt;Senior Shelby Withiam has been chosen as a flute alternate for the All-State Band festival being held in Rochester this December.&amp;nbsp;She was selected based on her perfect score of 100 on her level 6 flute solo at last May&amp;rsquo;s NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) solo festival held in Auburn.&amp;nbsp;Students are selected from across New York State based on their spring solo festival NYSSMA scores.&amp;nbsp;Flutes, saxophones, and percussion are annually the most competitive.&amp;nbsp;Congratulations Shelby!&lt;/p&gt;

		<title>England Trip: Parent Meeting</title>
		<description>&lt;p&gt;There will be a parent meeting for the English department&apos;s trip to England on Wednesday,&amp;nbsp;October 22, 2008 at 6 pm.&amp;nbsp; This meeting will be held in Mr. Massenzio&apos;s room, 213, in the high school.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

    &lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Take Your Teen on Adventures - &lt;/b&gt;Alcohol and drugs give teens a thrill, a rush. Show them that they can &amp;quot;go to the limit&amp;quot; in ways that are healthy. Take them sky-diving, roller-coaster riding, white water-rafting, or mountain climbing, Ok, these may be a bit extreme but there are many ways to have fun and excitement that don&amp;rsquo;t involve alcohol and other drugs. Do something. Push yourself and your teen out of your comfort zones. When you do this, you train the brain to get &amp;quot;high&amp;quot; naturally and not using some artificial substance.&lt;/li&gt;

    &lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Make the Tough Call - &lt;/b&gt;It is not easy to check up on our teens but it is important to do so. When they go somewhere, make the tough call to the place where they are going. Get to know your teen&apos;s friends&apos; parents. Find out about their supervision and what are their rules and guidelines for parties or gatherings. If their rules are not consistent with what you believe, don&apos;t let your teen go there.&lt;/li&gt;

    &lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Talk about Consequences - &lt;/b&gt;There are many negative consequences to drinking and other drug use. Discuss these with your teen regularly. Addictive substances...

        &lt;li&gt;create dependency (&amp;quot;I want more&amp;quot;)&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;damage the brain and cause poor judgment&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;poison the blood&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;can lead to unprotected sex (AIDS, pregnancy, STDs)&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;can induce vomiting and sickness&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;can lead to arrest. Legal fees can run as high as $10,000 and a police record will follow your teen into college and adulthood&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;can lead to a loss of trust and privileges with family and friends.&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;can lead to suspension in school, sports and other activities.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;/ul&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ol&gt;
&lt;ol type=&quot;1&quot; start=&quot;4&quot;&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Set Clear and Manageable Rules and Guidelines - &lt;/b&gt;First and foremost, set a policy of &lt;b&gt;NO&lt;/b&gt; drinking and other drug use. Be very clear about this. Research has shown that if you are not clear, your teen will interpret your &amp;quot;lack of clarity&amp;quot; as permission to use. Other rules may include:
    &lt;ul&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;not riding in a car with someone who has been drinking or using other drugs&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;coming home at a certain time&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;checking in by cell phone at certain times&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;offering rewards for good behavior&lt;/li&gt;
        &lt;li&gt;introducing you to friends and parents of those friends.&lt;/li&gt;
    &lt;/ul&gt;
    &lt;p&gt;Use consequences and state them in advance, not at the time of the mistake. &amp;quot;If you do such and such, these things will happen.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;
    &lt;/li&gt;

&lt;ol type=&quot;1&quot; start=&quot;5&quot;&gt;
    &lt;li&gt;&lt;b&gt;Listen, Listen, and Listen - &lt;/b&gt;Teens face a tough world these days. They have lots of feelings about all this but don&amp;rsquo;t want to show it because it is not &amp;quot;cool.&amp;quot; Flare-ups, however, inevitably come our way. Welcome these. Don&apos;t get defensive. Listen to their struggles and keep the lines of honest communication open. You need to listen to their feelings of anger, sadness, and embarrassment. Don&apos;t take it personally if directed at you. Your teen is trying to figure his or her life and you need to help them do this. If you blame or yell at them they will stop sharing their struggles. Tell them you love them no matter what.&lt;/li&gt;
