Athletic Placement Process
Athletic Placement Process Information
Homer Athletics remains committed to a philosophy that prioritizes the long-term development of our student-athletes. It is natural for families and coaches to have mixed emotions about this process. From a parent’s perspective, it’s easy to focus on the immediate challenge, but the broader goal for Homer Athletics is to ensure every child is supported socially, emotionally, and athletically. Even for our most talented players, staying at the modified level provides immense value. These students become natural leaders, modeling high-level skills and a strong work ethic that raises the bar for their entire peer group.
Separating one or two athletes from their grade-level cohort can unintentionally send the message that they are "above" their peers. It disrupts the chemistry of a group that will likely play together for years to come and takes away the opportunity to build lasting connections. While some 8th graders may participate in high-level travel sports and feel the modified pace is slower, the school environment is where leadership and maturity should shine. The focus is on developing great teammates, not just great players.
To ensure consistency and transparency for our families, Homer Athletics follows these guidelines:
If a sport is offered at the modified level, the student-athlete will participate at that level.
The Athletic Placement Process will only be explored if a sport is not offered at the modified level and the student has the experience and desire to continue. For example, because varsity golf, varsity bowling, boys/girls tennis, and game day cheer are not available at the junior high level, the APP can be discussed for those specific programs.
As we move into offseason workouts and team planning, it is important for everyone to have a clear understanding of where they will be playing. If questions arise about "playing up," the standard response from the athletic department is: "If the sport is offered at the modified level, that is the team they will play on."
This approach will remain our standard moving forward into the upcoming fall, winter, and spring seasons. The goal is to ensure every student enjoys their experience and grows alongside their teammates.
